May 05, 2020 That’s where the Cisco AnyConnect client fits in. In January, Cisco released a new version of the AnyConnect client that is fully integrated with the Umbrella SWG. Existing AnyConnect customers can simply update their client and connect it to a new or existing Umbrella SIG Essentials account to get the full advantages of a web proxy in the cloud. You will gain hands-on experience with configuring and troubleshooting remote access and site-to-site VPN solutions using Cisco ASA adaptive security appliances and Cisco IOS routers. For on-demandlearning, you will have access to this course for 12 months from the purchase date.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) enables you, while off campus, to connect securely to campus resources that are not otherwise available through a web browser. Since the campus' network infrastructure is protected from internet viruses and worm attacks by a firewall, VPN solution is necessary to gain access to specific campus resources, such as network storage, while maintaining the security of the system for both users and the network. UW-Whitewater enables VPN access using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Software. VPN securely encrypts data transmissions from your computer to the campus network. A valid campus net-id and password are required to gain access.

Accessing most campus enterprise technology services, such as Email, calendar, the UW-Whitewater web site, WINS, and other web-based services does not require the use of the VPN.

Cisco AnyConnect is the VPN tool used by UW-Whitewater. All university-owned laptops come with AnyConnect pre-installed. If you need help accessing or installing AnyConnect VPN, please consult the training/documentation page.

Overview

To access the university's network from off campus, use the Virtual Private Network (VPN). Virtual Private Networking is a method of providing a more secure network connection from public or untrusted networks. When a VPN connection is established, it creates an encrypted communication path between your computer and the VPN server. VPN provides increased security and the same level of access as a direct connection to the campus network. This helps to protect your network traffic from many types of common network attacks, which could be used to expose your personal information. Because the VPN server is hosted within the Texas A&M University firewall, a VPN connection will also provide access to university resources that are not typically available from non-TAMU connections. This service is offered at no charge.

If you have network-based access lists that restrict access to your systems from the campus network (i.e., 128.194.0.0/16 and 165.91.0.0/16), you will need to modify your access lists to include 172.31.0.0/16. VPN users will appear to be coming from these networks. If you are doing restrictions by domain name, all of the IP addresses in the these networks will inverse resolve to domain names in the tamu.edu domain.
