Zen is a television series produced in Britain for the BBC by Left Bank Pictures and was co-produced by WGBH Boston for a Masterpiece theater series. Based upon Michael Dibdin's Aurelio Zen detective novels, the series was filmed in Italy, however the dialogue spoken is in English. The main cast features Rufus Sewell as Aurelio Zen, Caterina Murino as Tania Moretti, Julie Cox as Mara, Callum Blue as Carlo, Valentina Cervi as Arianna, Catherine Spaak as Mamma, Ben Miles as Amedeo Colonna and Stanley Townsend as Moscati. In the series opener, the Vendetta story finds Detective Zen being sent to re-investigate a murder in a far off and very remote village. The pressure is on since the murder may incite a political scandal. Since the Chief of Police would prefer to spend time with his assistant, he is less than interested in providing any viable leads for Zen. Meanwhile, Zen is also being pursued by another gangster in a plot of revenge. Cabal is the second episode and concerns the death of Umberto Ruspanti, a famous aristocrat. Zen is led to the shadowy underworld of a crime organization that is more secret and powerful than even the Mafia. The Ministry demands a fast suicide verdict, but Zen's instinct knows better. The third episode is Ratking and finds Detective Zen racing against the clock in order to quickly rescue wealthy industrialist Ruggerio Miletti, who has been kidnapped. Because of his political ties and a manipulative family, the case becomes complicated very fast. Zen's love interest, Tania has an ex who tries to do everything possible to get Zen totally out of the picture. During each case, Zen manages to stay balanced, even while walking dangerous political tightropes filled with intrigue. Competing powers attempt to throw wrenches into every investigation, but he is savvy and smart enough to thwart their efforts. His smooth demeanor helps him to triumph without ever having to sacrifice his integrity.

Zen is a British television series produced by Left Bank Pictures for the BBC, co-produced with WGBH Boston for its Masterpieceanthology series, Mediaset and ZDF.[1] It stars Rufus Sewell and Caterina Murino and is based on the Aurelio Zendetective novels by Michael Dibdin.[2] The series was filmed on location in Italy, but the dialogue is in English. The series, which comprises three 90-minute films, was broadcast in the United Kingdom on Sunday evenings from 2 January 2011 on BBC One.[3] The three films were based on the books Vendetta (1990), Cabal (1992) and Ratking (1988).[4] The series was cancelled by BBC One in February 2011; BBC One controller Danny Cohen later said there were already enough male crime-fighters on TV.[5] Left Bank, the show's producer, tried to find other broadcasters to fund another series but were unsuccessful.[6]
