Opera final releases are highlighted in light yellow, with bold text. Versions are hyperlinked to their respective Windows changelog where possible in the “Version number” column of each table.

  1. Opera 12.16 was the last to support OS X 10.5 Leopard on an Intel Mac Opera 25 was the last to support OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Opera 36 was the last to support OS X 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion Versions since then require OS X 10.9 Mavericks or newer.

Project names were first assigned and made public starting with the Opera 9 series (Merlin). Previous to Opera 9.00 TP, projects were classified with internal branch numbers and not publicized. The Project name data cells in the following Opera version tables are identified as Internal.
Historical note
Opera 8.50 “Bolton” version: The Opera 8.50 “Bolton” version permanently removed the ad banner and licensing fee from the browser. Opera was previously available free of charge with an ad banner. Users had the option of paying a license fee to remove the ad banner and receive premium support.

Opera 7 series

Historical note
Opera 7.01 “Bork” version: Microsoft’s MSN portal targeted Opera users by purposely providing them with a broken page. As a reply to MSN’s treatment of its users, Opera Software released a very special Bork version of its Opera 7 for Windows browser. The Bork version behaves differently on one Web site: MSN. Users accessing the MSN site will see the page transformed into the language of the famous Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show: Bork, Bork, Bork! Historical note
“Elektra” was originally used as a codename for the 4.0 release, but was later used to refer to the rendering capabilities (the “engine”) from version 3.5 through version 6. The Opera 7 series and those that followed began the formal labeling of the rendering engine, in this case “Opera Presto”.

The days when major browser updates were few and far between are over. Nowadays, it’s de rigeur for browser manufacturers to speed up development, which means opening up less stable builds to the masses in order to get them bug-checked as quickly as possible.

It may only enjoy a fraction of the market share afforded to rival web browsers, but Opera is by no means a poor relation to the likes of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. In many ways it’s been a pioneer – Opera was the first major browser to use tabs and provide a speed dial for its home page, and it has always been one of the quickest browsers out there thanks to a lightweight footprint, something its rivals are only now starting to embrace. Another unique feature is a built-in mail client enabling you to combine browsing and email in one application.

Opera isn’t afraid to utilise the best bits of other browsers either – version 11 saw the debut of a slimmed down user interface pioneered by Chrome and also copied by IE9 and Firefox 4. It also brought third-party extensions to the table for the first time, along with a handy bookmarks bar.
